International students arrive for spring 2010 semesterStudents arrive for spring term

Spring Orientation Day, which took place on January 18, was a snowy experience here in Stockholm this year. For some of our students, who have never seen snow before - this was a totally new experience! Exchange student, Bella Burgess, from Auckland University in New Zealand came to Stockholm University to study international law. "Sweden is held up as an example of how societies should be run. I chose Stockholm and Sweden in particular because of its humanitarian and environmental policies," says Bella. "In Auckland it never goes below five degrees," Bella explains. "This is exotic," she says.

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping visited Stockholm University at the end of March 2010. During the visit the Vice President presented the University Library with a comprehensive digital collection of Chinese literature.

The Swedish Research Council has conducted an analysis of the scientific publication citation levels of several European countries, including Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The analysis shows that publications from Stockholm University are the most cited in Sweden.

Vice-Chancellor Kåre Bremer visited South Africa this spring to meet the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town. The two universities have now signed an agreement that giving Stockholm students the chance to spend a semester or two at the University of Cape Town – one of Africa's top universities.

Stockholm researchers contribute to important health inequality report

Health inequalities reportThe term health inequality refers to gaps in the quality of health and health care across racial, ethnic, sexual orientation and socioeconomic groups. A new report on health inequalities in Britain, "Fair Societies, Healthy Lives: The Marmot Review", was published this spring. The report, based on an extensive review of evidence and policies in England today, offers recommendations for the reduction of health inequalities. Professors Denny Vågerö and Olle Lundberg from Stockholm University's Centre for Health Equity Studies (CHESS) were actively involved in work on this report.

Video report: Scientists warn of methane emissions in Artic

Russian and Swedish researchers report in the journal Science on significant methane emissions in the Arctic. The powerful greenhouse gas methane is being released into the atmosphere from an area of the East Siberian Sea equivalent to more than four times the area of Sweden. Professor Örjan Gustafsson speaks about the new discoveries and what they mean for our understanding of the Arctic region.

Feature: Meet Nobel Laureate Paul Crutzen

Paul Crutzen. Photo: OrasisNobel Laureate Paul Crutzen, an atmospheric chemist best known for his work on ozone depletion, originally came to Stockholm’s Department of Meteorology as a computer programmer back in 1959. He spent the first seven or so years of his career working on meteorological projects, helping to build some of the first numerical weather prediction models. Paul Crutzen met with the University's editorial team to talk about global warming, not owning a car, and what makes a good research environment.

This spring Stockholm University signed a new university-wide agreement with the University of Vermont (UVM) that will enable the bilateral exchange of undergraduate students. Vermont is highly ranked among national public universities in the USA and is considered one of the most environmentally responsible schools there.

Governance and Management Training Programmes in Iran

GOVMATIn January, Stockholm University’s Governance and Management Training Programmes (GOVMAT) co-sponsored the first International Professional Real Estate Development conference in Tehran, Iran. The event, which drew an audience of 1,200 Iranian real estate professionals, was organised by GOVMAT in collaboration with Sharif University’s Management and Economics Think Tank, Iran’s first think tank of its kind.

Government bill presented on fees for non-EU/EEA students

This spring the Swedish government presented a bill entitled "Competing on the basis of quality - tuition fees for foreign students". The bill suggests that study fees for students from outside the EU/EEA area should be apply from autumn 2011. Exchange students and students from within the EU/EEA will not be affected by the new proposals.

More housing for exchange students

This year Stockholm University is able to offer an additional seventy new student apartments for exchange students, bringing the current total to 408. From mid-February, another twenty-five apartments became available, bringing the total to 433 apartments.

Application dates for master's programmes 

A small number of our international master's programmes begin during the spring term 2011. For prospective students wishing to commence their studies during spring 2011, application opens on June 1, 2010 and continues until the closing date, on August 1, 2010. There are eleven master's programmes in total starting in spring 2011, and all except one – in law – are within the the Faculty of Science.

Stockholm at Expo 2010 in Shanghai

Stockholm is taking part in the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. "World Exhibitions are huge events where you compete with the whole world for attention, so you have to be smart in order to reach out. The theme of the entire World Expo is Better City, Better Life, and it suits us just fine, since Stockholm is named European Green Capital 2010," said Sten Nordin, Mayor of Stockholm.
